Welcome to the world of Medicare! If you’re approaching your 65th birthday, you likely have a lot of questions buzzing around in your head. At Clear Benefit Solutions we’re here to provide clear, straightforward answers to your most pressing concerns as you become eligible for Medicare. Let’s dive in!

Who is Eligible for Medicare?
Generally, you become eligible for Medicare at age 65 if you are a U.S. citizen or have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 5 years. You also need to have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 quarters) to qualify for premium-free Part A.
Even if you haven’t met the work history requirements, you may still be eligible for Medicare Part A by paying a monthly premium, and you’ll still need to pay a premium for Part B.
What if I am still working at 65?
This is a very common question! If you are still working at age 65 and have health insurance through your (or your spouse’s) employer, you may be able to delay enrolling in Medicare Part B without penalty. Here’s what to consider:
- Employer Coverage is “Creditable Coverage”: If your employer-sponsored health insurance pays at least as much as Medicare’s standard coverage, it’s generally considered “creditable coverage.” You can likely delay enrolling in Part B. You’ll have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to sign up for Part B without a penalty once your employment or the employer-sponsored coverage ends (an 8-month window).
- Enroll in Part A? Since most people don’t pay a premium for Medicare Part A, it might be wise to enroll when you turn 65, even if you have employer coverage. It can act as secondary coverage. However, be aware of potential impacts on Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions.
- Small Employer Exception: If you work for an employer with fewer than 20 employees, your employer’s plan might expect you to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B as your primary insurance at age 65. Check with your benefits administrator!
When Can I Enroll?
Understanding the key enrollment periods is crucial:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is your first chance to sign up, a 7-month window centered around your 65th birthday: 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after. For someone turning 65 in May 2025, their IEP runs from February 1, 2025, to August 31, 2025.
- General Enrollment Period (GEP): If you miss your IEP, you can enroll between January 1st and March 31st each year, with coverage starting July 1st. Late enrollment penalties for Part B may apply.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): As mentioned earlier, certain life events (like losing employer coverage) trigger a SEP, allowing enrollment outside the IEP or GEP.
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): From October 15th to December 7th each year, you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug coverage for the following year.
Am I Automatically Enrolled at 65?
You will generally be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B if you are already receiving Social Security benefits at least 4 months before you turn 65 and live in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico for Part B). You’ll receive your Medicare card about 3 months before your 65th birthday.
If you are not yet receiving Social Security benefits at 65 (e.g., still working), you will need to actively apply for Medicare through the Social Security Administration’s website or by phone.
