Understanding Medicare Enrollment Periods

Annual Enrollment Period Medicare

Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming, but at Clear Benefit Solutions, we believe understanding your options is the first step to feeling confident in your healthcare choices. A common question we hear from our clients right here in West Michigan is, “Can I change my Medicare plan?” The answer is yes, but it’s crucial to know when and how you can make those changes.

A Critical Reminder for This Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s a good idea to review it annually. Plans are changing significantly this year. We know that at least 75,000 people in Michigan are having their plans canceled completely. The most popular plan for new enrollments in 2025 is dropping 55,000 people and raising premiums and reducing benefits for those they keep.

Don’t assume your plan will remain the same. The best way to make sure your coverage will not be negatively affected is to get a professional review.

At Clear Benefit Solutions, we take the time to sit down with you, explain your options in plain language, and help you find a plan that works best for your specific needs. We’re your neighbors, and we’re here to help you make informed decisions about your Medicare coverage.

Key Enrollment Periods

The ability to change your Medicare plan is tied to specific enrollment periods throughout the year. If you miss these windows, you may have to wait until the next one opens. Here’s a breakdown of the key enrollment periods you should be aware of:

  1. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

This is the most common time for people to make changes to their Medicare plans. The AEP runs from October 15 to December 7 every year. During this time, you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.
  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare.
  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
  • Join, switch, or drop a Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) plan.
  1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

This is your first opportunity to sign up for Medicare. It begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after. During this 7-month window, you can enroll in:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance)
  • Part B (Medical Insurance)
  • Part D (Prescription Drug coverage)
  • A Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan
  1. General Enrollment Period (GEP)

If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period for Part B, you can sign up during the General Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. Be aware, however, that you may face a late enrollment penalty, and your coverage won’t begin until July 1.

  1. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)

If you are already on a Medicare Advantage plan, the MA OEP gives you a second chance to make a change. It runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. During this period, you can:

  • Switch from your current Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (and also join a Part D plan).
  1. Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Life happens, and sometimes you need to make a change outside of the typical enrollment periods. Special Enrollment Periods are available for specific circumstances, such as:

  • Moving to a new area where your current plan is not available.
  • Losing your current coverage.
  • Qualifying for Extra Help with prescription drug costs.
